Fuerzas Aliadas Humanitarias 2011
What is it'
U.S. Army South will conduct Fuerzas Aliadas Humanitarias 2011 (FA HUM 11) in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago from April 4-15. FA HUM 11 is a multinational exercise which includes military and civilian personnel from Central and South America, the Caribbean, Canada, Great Britain and the United States, as well as representatives of international and regional organizations. FA HUM 11 promotes regional partnerships and cooperation and coordination among military organizations, governments, and non-governmental agencies in the conduct of disaster relief and recovery efforts.
What has the Army done'
U.S. Army South has been collaborating with disaster management agencies and regional military forces in enhancing military and civil cooperation and coordination for several years. El Salvador hosted FA HUM in 2008 and Costa Rica hosted in 2009 with over 25 nations participating each year. FA HUM was cancelled in 2010 due to the disaster relief efforts in Haiti in support of Operation Unified Response. Over 30 nations are scheduled to participate in FA HUM 11.
What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future'
U.S. Army South executes several multinational exercises and army-to-army engagements with Latin American partner nations throughout the year. These exercises are instrumental in strengthening professional relationships and collaboration between the respective armies. Army engagements this year include key leader visits, professional exchange programs and army staff talks.
Why is this important to the Army'
The U.S. Army's capabilities in the region and elsewhere are greatly influenced by the relationships forged with partner nation armies. Partner armies in the region have assisted in disaster relief and continue to support contingency operations. The contributions of Latin American countries have been critical to disaster relief efforts in Haiti. Increasing partner nation capabilities at home and in global multinational operations is enormously beneficial to U.S. and world interests. Strengthening our relationships with partner nation armies through this exercise will have lasting effects on the peace and stability of the region.
